How this calculator works

The standard mileage deduction is your business miles multiplied by the IRS rate of $0.725. If you enter 12,000 business miles, your deduction is $8,700.

Tax savings depend on your bracket. At a 22% federal income tax rate, $8,700 saves you $1,914 in income tax. If you are self-employed, the same deduction also reduces your self-employment tax (15.3%), saving an additional $1,331. Combined: $3,245 in tax savings from a single deduction.

The calculator adds parking and tolls if you enter them. These are deductible on top of the standard mileage rate.

What this calculator does not include

This tool calculates the standard mileage method only. If you use the actual expenses method, your deduction is based on total vehicle costs multiplied by your business-use percentage, a different calculation.

State tax savings are not included. Most states that have an income tax also allow the mileage deduction on your state return, increasing your total savings. The amount varies by state and bracket.

FAQ

Do I need to track my miles to claim this deduction?

Yes. The IRS requires a mileage log with the date, destination, purpose, and miles for each business trip. The deduction is only valid if you have records to support it.

Can W-2 employees use this calculator?

You can calculate the number, but W-2 employees cannot claim the mileage deduction on their federal return. The deduction is available to self-employed workers and independent contractors only.

Is this deduction per vehicle or per person?

Per person. You total all business miles across all vehicles you used for business during the year. If you drove two cars for work and logged 8,000 miles on one and 4,000 on the other, your total is 12,000 business miles.
