Common questions
What is TruMile?
An IRS-compliant mileage tracker for iPhone. It detects and records your drives using GPS, lets you classify each one as business, personal, medical, or charitable, and calculates your deduction using the current IRS standard mileage rate.
How does automatic trip detection work?
With background location and motion permissions granted, TruMile uses your device's GPS and motion sensors to notice when you start driving. Trips record themselves, and you classify them later with a swipe: right for business, left for personal.
What does Pro include?
The free tier covers 40 automatically detected trips a month, every month, plus manual trip entry and all calculators. Pro removes the cap and adds multiple vehicles, PDF mileage reports, expense tracking, Bluetooth vehicle detection, and iCloud sync across devices. Pro is $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial. See pricing.
How do I restore my purchase on a new device?
Open TruMile, go to account settings, and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple ID you bought with. If it does not take, sign out of the App Store and back in, then tap Restore Purchases again.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Apple manages subscriptions. On your iPhone open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select TruMile, then Cancel Subscription. Pro features stay active through the end of the period you already paid for.
How do I request a refund?
Apple processes every purchase. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com with your Apple ID.
Is my data private?
Trip data, locations, and vehicle information live on your device. If you sign in to a TruMile account, your rides are also backed up to that account on our servers, so you can get them back on a new phone. That backup is not a paid feature — it works the same on free and Pro. With iCloud sync on, your trips also go to your private iCloud account. We do not sell or share your personal data. Full detail in the privacy policy.
Are the calculations IRS-compliant?
TruMile uses the current IRS standard mileage rate and sums GPS segments rather than measuring straight-line distance. The 2026 business rate splits mid-year: 72.5 cents a mile for January 1 through June 30, and 76 cents a mile from July 1 onward. TruMile applies the right rate to each trip by date. It is still a tracking tool, not tax advice, so check your situation with a qualified tax professional.
Does TruMile work on iPad?
TruMile is built for iPhone running iOS 18 or later.
Troubleshooting
Trips are not being detected automatically
TruMile needs Always location and motion permission. Open Settings > TruMile > Location and choose Always, then enable Motion & Fitness. Also confirm automatic tracking is on in the app's settings.
The app is crashing or not responding
Force-quit and reopen. If it continues, update to the latest version from the App Store. Your purchase comes back with Restore Purchases. Before you delete the app, export your trips as CSV — export works on any plan, and that file is the copy you hold yourself. If you are signed in to a TruMile account your rides are backed up to that account too, on free and Pro alike, but export first anyway.
My purchase is not showing up
Open account settings and tap Restore Purchases. Confirm you are signed in with the Apple ID you bought with and that you have a connection.
Battery use seems high
TruMile stays on low-power significant location changes while idle and only uses continuous GPS during an active trip. If battery is still a concern, turn off automatic detection and log trips manually.
