Walmart Spark Driver Tax Deductions

Walmart Spark Driver is Walmart's last-mile delivery platform, and Spark drivers are independent contractors for tax purposes. That means Schedule C, mileage deduction at 72.5¢/mile, and self-employment tax on net earnings.

What Spark sends you at year-end

Spark issues a 1099-NEC reflecting the fees paid for completed deliveries. Tips are reported on the same form. The annual tax summary in the Spark driver app shows total earnings plus active-delivery miles, but as with other gig platforms, the platform mileage figure under-counts deductible miles.

Mileage you can deduct

• Driving from store pickup to delivery (active-delivery miles)
• Driving between back-to-back deliveries when running multiple orders
• Driving from a delivery back toward a Walmart store to start the next order
• Driving while online and waiting for a delivery offer
• Driving to Walmart to pick up an order that has been assigned

Mileage you cannot deduct

• Driving from home to your first store pickup of the day (commuting)
• Driving home after your last delivery (commuting)
• Personal errands during a shift

Quarterly estimated tax

If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in federal tax for the year, the IRS expects quarterly payments. The mileage deduction reduces the income you base estimates on, so track miles in real time rather than reconstructing at quarter-end.
