Filing day is easier when the boxes are checked in advance. Here is what gig drivers need to gather before sitting down to file.
Income documents
- All 1099-NEC forms from each platform (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, etc.)
- Any 1099-K forms (for payment-card transactions above the IRS reporting threshold)
- Annual tax summary from each platform (not an IRS form, but useful for cross-checking)
- Records of cash tips not reported on any 1099
- Bank statements showing direct deposits from platforms (cross-check)
Mileage records
- Mileage log with date, destination, business purpose, miles per trip
- January 1 and December 31 odometer readings for every vehicle
- Vehicle make, model, year, date placed in service
- If using actual expenses: gas, insurance, registration, repair, lease/depreciation receipts
Other deduction documents
- Phone bill (you deduct the business-use percentage)
- Health insurance premiums (above-the-line for self-employed)
- Retirement contributions (SEP-IRA, Solo 401(k), SIMPLE IRA)
- Receipts for car chargers, dashboard mounts, snacks/water for passengers
- Records of any tolls, parking fees, or background-check costs
- Tax preparation fees (business portion)
Quarterly payment records
- Confirmation numbers for any quarterly estimated tax payments made
- State estimated tax confirmations (if applicable)
- 1040-ES vouchers if you used paper
Forms you will be filing
- Form 1040 (personal return)
- Schedule C (business income and expenses)
- Schedule SE (self-employment tax)
- Schedule 1 (additional income and adjustments)
- Form 4562 if claiming depreciation (only with actual expenses method)
- State return
Deadlines
- April 15: federal return + state return + Q1 estimated payment for current year
- June 15: Q2 estimated payment
- September 15: Q3 estimated payment
- January 15: Q4 estimated payment for prior year
If you missed something
Missing 1099s can be requested directly from the platform (most have a tax-document download in the driver dashboard). Missing mileage requires reconstruction. Possible but weaker. Missing receipts for actual-expense deductions limit you to standard mileage method for that vehicle-year.
