Shipt shoppers are independent contractors, so nothing is withheld and you file Schedule C plus Schedule SE. The tax that surprises people is not income tax, it is the 15.3 percent self-employment tax that applies from the first dollar of profit. Mileage is what keeps that number down, and Shipt does not track it for you.

Which form arrives, and when it does not
Shipt reports shopper earnings on Form 1099-NEC. The federal filing threshold for 2026 is $2,000, raised from $600 under the OBBBA. Earn less and no form is issued, which changes nothing about your obligation to report the income.
Your own earnings history in the Shipt app is the reconciliation source. Pull the annual total before filing rather than waiting to see what arrives.
The self-employment tax math
Self-employment tax is 15.3 percent, covering both halves of Social Security and Medicare, and it applies to 92.35 percent of net profit. On $18,000 of profit:
- Taxable base: $18,000 x 0.9235 = $16,623
- Self-employment tax: $16,623 x 0.153 = $2,543
- Income tax is calculated separately on top of this
Half the SE tax is deductible against income on the return, which softens it slightly but not much. The lever that actually moves the figure is reducing net profit, and for a shopper that means mileage.
The miles a Shipt shopper can deduct
A mile is deductible when it is driven for a business purpose, whether or not the Shipt app happened to be open at the time. A working shift generates several categories:
- Home to the first store of the shift, once your business day has started
- Store to the customer's address
- Between stores when an order spans more than one
- Between deliveries while you remain available for orders
- Return trips for exchanges, returns or a forgotten item
- Trips for supplies such as insulated bags
Purely personal driving in between is not deductible, and neither is the trip home once you have finished for the day and closed the app. The distinction is what your log has to show. Our business versus commuting guide covers the boundary.
What the mileage deduction is worth
A shopper driving 14,000 business miles across 2026, split evenly around the July rate change:
- 7,000 miles at 72.5 cents: $5,075
- 7,000 miles at 76 cents: $5,320
- Total deduction: $10,395
Against $18,000 of gross earnings that takes profit to roughly $7,600, and the self-employment tax bill falls from $2,543 to about $1,074. The $1,469 saving comes from the log alone, before any income tax effect is counted.
Other deductions worth claiming
- The business-use share of your phone bill and data plan
- Insulated bags, coolers and shopping equipment
- Parking fees paid during deliveries, deductible on top of the mileage rate
- Hot bags, phone mounts and chargers used for work
Note that fuel, insurance and maintenance are not on that list. They are already inside the standard mileage rate, and claiming them alongside it is a double deduction. See writing off gas.
Do I have to pay quarterly?
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year, yes. Nothing is withheld from Shipt payouts, so the entire liability accrues unpaid until you send it. See quarterly estimated tax for the payment dates.
Are customer tips taxable?
Yes, in full, whether they came through the app or in cash. In-app tips are included in your earnings total. Cash tips are not recorded anywhere by Shipt and are still reportable income.
What if I also shop for other platforms?
All of it can go on a single Schedule C if it is the same line of work, and the mileage log covers the whole day rather than one app. See multi-platform gig mileage.
Shipt's earnings history covers what you were paid, and stops there. TruMile logs every business mile automatically, so the deduction that offsets your self-employment tax is backed by a record rather than a year-end estimate. Try TruMile →
