Instacart Taxes: Full-Service Shoppers vs In-Store Shoppers

Published 2026-08-24

Instacart has two shopper roles with completely different tax treatment, and the mileage deduction only exists for one of them. Full-service shoppers are independent contractors who file Schedule C and deduct every business mile. In-store shoppers are part-time employees who receive a W-2, have tax withheld, and cannot deduct unreimbursed mileage at all.

Sources: IRS, About Form 1099-NEC; IRS, About Schedule C (Form 1040); IRS Publication 463; IRS Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-29.

Work out which one you are first

  • Full-service shopper: you shop and you deliver, using your own vehicle. Independent contractor. Paid per batch with no withholding. Files Schedule C and Schedule SE.
  • In-store shopper: you shop inside a single store and someone else delivers. Part-time employee. Paid hourly with tax withheld. Receives a W-2.

The rest of this page is about full-service shoppers. If you receive a W-2 from Instacart, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act suspension of unreimbursed employee expenses, made permanent by the OBBBA, means the federal mileage deduction is not available to you.

The 1099-NEC threshold

Instacart reports full-service shopper earnings on Form 1099-NEC. The federal threshold for 2026 is $2,000, raised from $600 by the OBBBA. Below that no form is filed and the income is still fully reportable. Your earnings history in the Shopper app is what you reconcile to.

The batch payment includes mileage, and that is not a reimbursement

Instacart's batch pay formula accounts for distance, which leads shoppers to assume their driving is already covered and not separately deductible. It is not a reimbursement. There is no accountable plan, no substantiation requirement and no per-mile rate. It is simply part of what you were paid, and it is taxable income.

You report the full batch payment as gross receipts and then deduct your actual business mileage at the standard rate on top. Those are two separate entries, not an offset.

Which miles count

  • Driving to the store once your working day has begun
  • Store to the customer's address
  • Between stores on a multi-store batch
  • Between batches while you remain available for offers
  • Repositioning to a higher-demand area between batches
  • Return trips for refunds, replacements or a missed item

Instacart's app records distance for its own pay calculation, not for your tax return, and what it captures is narrower than what is deductible. See whether Instacart tracks your mileage for the detail.

The arithmetic on a typical year

16,000 business miles in 2026, split evenly across the July rate change:

  • 8,000 miles at 72.5 cents: $5,800
  • 8,000 miles at 76 cents: $6,080
  • Total deduction: $11,880

On $21,000 of gross earnings that reduces profit to roughly $9,100. Self-employment tax at 15.3 percent on 92.35 percent of profit falls from about $2,967 to about $1,286, before income tax is even considered.

Deductions besides mileage

  • The business-use share of your phone bill
  • Insulated bags and coolers
  • Parking and tolls incurred while working, which sit outside the mileage rate
  • Instacart's service fees where they are deducted from your pay

Fuel, insurance, repairs and depreciation are already inside the standard mileage rate and cannot be claimed alongside it.

Do I need to pay estimated tax?

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, yes. Nothing is withheld from batch payments. See quarterly estimated tax.

What if I do both roles?

You will receive both a W-2 and possibly a 1099-NEC, and the mileage attaches only to the full-service work. Keep the two streams separated in your log, because a blended annual total cannot be split credibly after the fact.

Are tips taxable?

Yes. In-app tips are included in your earnings total. Cash tips are not recorded by Instacart and are still fully reportable.
