Does Turo Track Your Mileage?

Published 2026-08-29

Turo tracks trip distance, and that number is not your mileage deduction. The distance shown on a Turo trip is how far the guest drove your car. You were not in it. The standard mileage rate applies to miles you drive for your business, so the number Turo does record is the one number you cannot claim, and the miles you can claim are the ones Turo never sees.

Which miles can a Turo host actually deduct?

  • Driving the car to a guest for a delivery, and driving back
  • Driving to collect the car at the end of a trip
  • Fuel and charging runs between bookings
  • Trips to a car wash, detailer, or vacuum before a handoff
  • Trips to the shop for maintenance, tires, or inspection
  • Driving to buy supplies for the listing, such as cleaning products or a car seat

Every one of those is a drive you made for the business, in a vehicle you own, for a clear business purpose. None of them appear in your Turo host dashboard, because the dashboard is built around bookings, not around your errands.

Standard mileage or actual expenses?

This choice matters more for Turo hosts than for almost any other gig. Under the standard mileage rate you deduct a flat amount per mile you personally drove, and you cannot separately deduct depreciation, lease payments, insurance, maintenance, gas, or registration, because the rate already includes them. Under the actual expenses method you deduct the real costs of the vehicle multiplied by its business use percentage.

Because a Turo vehicle spends most of its working life being driven by someone else, hosts with a high business use percentage and real depreciation frequently find actual expenses produces the larger deduction. Turo's own host tax guide walks through both methods and notes that the choice has to be made in the first year the vehicle is available for business use, and that choosing actual expenses first locks you out of switching to standard mileage on that vehicle later.

Why you still need a mileage log under either method

Under the standard mileage method, your logged business miles are the deduction. Under the actual expenses method, your business use percentage is calculated by dividing business miles by total miles driven, so the log is what makes the percentage defensible. Either way, the number that decides the size of your deduction comes from a mileage record, and Turo does not keep one for you.

Do the guest's miles count toward business use?

The mileage a guest puts on the car is not mileage you drove, so it does not go in the business miles column of a standard mileage calculation. How rental use factors into the business use percentage of the vehicle for the actual expenses method is a question worth raising with your own tax advisor, because it depends on how the activity is characterized on your return.

What is the 2026 standard mileage rate?

72.5 cents per mile from January 1 through June 30, 2026, rising to 76 cents per mile from July 1 through December 31, 2026. A delivery-heavy host running 30 miles of handoff and fuel driving per booking, across 60 bookings, drives 1,800 miles that are worth $1,368 at the higher rate.

What record does the IRS expect?

A contemporaneous log with the date, the miles, and the business purpose, written when the drive happened. Turo trip records establish that a booking existed, which supports business purpose, but they contain nothing about the driving you did around that booking.
